I am using

PROC MEANS DATA=data_categorical NMISS N;
RUN;

to find missing values in categorical variables. 3 of these columns contain character values and do not show up in the results. How can I get these to show up?

With proc means you can't do this, try proc freq instead.

I ended up creating dummy variables, which I will need later anyway. Thanks man!

data have;
 set sashelp.class;
 call missing(name);
run;

proc sql;
select n(name) as n,nmiss(name) as nmiss from have;
quit;
