I want to create a proc format for a character variable - X, where

X is blank then Missing

X is non-blank then Present

proc format;

value $X

'*'='Present'

' '='Missing'

;

run;

what should I use to denote a non-blank value for X?

Use the OTHER keyword.

value $X

  ' '='Missing'

  other ='Present'
