Hi,

We are migrating from SAS 9.3 to SAS 9.4.

The application has SAS DI Studio , SAS EG  , SAS Management Console and SAS IDP.  How do we migrate the metadata. Can we use Metadata Package Export and Import options to do this.

Do we need to take any special care as the current version is 9.3 and new one is 9.4?

Thanks,

Vijay.

Hi Vijay,

You have basically two options (more may exist, eager to lean):

1) Migrate using the SAS Migration Utility (SMU). This will create a migration package with all your metadata in it. It does impose some serious prerequisites like keeping your host topology 1:1 the same. And with 1:1 we mean same OS, same "bitness" (9.3 could still be 32-bit), same encoding etc. SMU may seem convenient but I have personally never seen it work to any degree of satisfaction.

2) Install your next SAS deployment on a fresh set of hosts and migrate the content using export/import. It looks like more work but I reality this is not a big deal. The advantage is that you business can proceed in 9.3 until everything is prepared in 9.4 for a cut-over. Of course a freeze period will be in order to prevent a moving target for your migration. Also ask the users to comb through their stuff so you do not migrate obsolete objects.

Keep in mind that your metadata may not be the only class of objects to migrate. Your data may also need to be migrated. And yo umay want to exploit some of the nice new features that come available to you with 9.4.

Of course there's lots more to it in terms of project management but that's largely outside the realm of SAS technology.

Hope this helps,

- Jan.

I also agree with @jklaverstijn's second option. You should use this opportunity to review, update and improve your target SAS architecture.
