So, I have one SAS license. Is it possible to install SAS on two machines with the same license as long as both machines are not using  SAS at the same time? Basically, we have some jobs that are automated and we want to have a failover machine in the event the main automation server goes down.

Thanks

We are allowed to have Disaster Recovery Servers as part of our licence agreement with SAS. The DR servers can be run on warm standby but must share server aliases with Production so only one set of servers can be used at a time. Both sets of servers use the same SAS licence files. When running on the DR servers log warnings state that you are not running on the licensed CPUID, but that this is OK if these are dedicated DR / backup servers.

Just to clarify: in our previous setup, we also had a "warm" standby in the secondary datacenter that had a copy of the complete SAS installation, but no services started, and a different hostname (that different hostname will cause many/most SAS services to fail on startup).

In case of a catastrophic failure, a script would be invoked on the secondary that changed the hostname, activated the SAN mounts and uncommented (via awk) the SAS-relevant entries in inittab. Following that, a reboot of that server would activate all services.

In our current setup, the server is a LPAR where a synchronized image is present in the secondary datacenter. In case of failure of the primary, that LPAR is "booted", and we're up and running again.
