Renaming variable starting with a numeric

I received a dataset that needs to be imported into sas.  One of the fields

383_appr_mod  begins with a numeric instead of a char.  I recall a process where you could use the variable with a  'n however is it possible to demonstrate how to rename this so it can be accepted as an input
