Reading data from SPSS to SAS with special characters

I have a data set in SPSS and for some columns (variables), I have observations which are notes in French or Spanish with special characters. How may I read my data into SAS and keep the correct French/Spanish text?

Did you try change the encoding of the output dataset to 'UTF=8'? 

DATA my_data (encoding='UTF-8');

SET some_data;

RUN;
