Hello:

I have some questions regarding proc SQL but first does proc SQL require that input data sets be permanent SAS data sets or can they be working data sets?

I'm not aware of any proc in SAS that requires a permanent data set.

How good is proco SQL for formatting?  Would you suggest outputting a dataset from proc SQL and then formatting using proc report?

It depends on what you have and what you are looking for.  Proc report will have a lot more options but it really depends.
