I have been running my SQL in SQL Server. I created a Proc SQL statement in SAS. The where statement for SQL Server specifies IS NULL and is not NULL for a individual varchar fields. What is the best way to add this criteria in SAS?

SAS treats them as missing. Note that you can still use NULL in your SQL queries but the MISSING() function is likely what you want to use. And conveniently the same for numeric/varchar.

where value is null;
where value is not null;

where missing(variable)
where not missing(variable);

Try this: where MyVar is (not) missing
