Identify Prescription with antidiabetic drugs

Hi everyone

I need to find antidiabetic drugs from claims prescription data file.

I have patient_ID and ndc codes/generic drug name/drug name.

Which one to use to get antidiabetic numbers and what smart way of coding should be used?

As I have 1180 ndc codes are there is data dictionary for antidiabetic drugs

There are mapping of drugs to disease but the one I have is proprietary. Not sure of a public source that's available.

Are your NDC codes the 5 digit part that just describes the actual drug or the 10/11 character version that includes the manufacturer and packaging information?

The codes are likely to be easier to work with as spelling of names typically has lots of problems. If you have the longer version I would be strongly tempted to extract the drug only information for comparisons. That may reduce the requirements significantly for this step.

I suggest that you ask whoever gave you this task where to find the list of antidiabetic drugs to use for this project. Since many drugs have multiple uses you may not get any generic "antidiabetic" definition to work for a given project.
