I have an excel file where I need to validate column values before I load it to the actual dataset.

custno which is a char column and reqid which is numeric column.

Tried below 2 options in my code but they didn't work.

if (is number(number)) error_message = "it is not  a number" ;
if digit(number)>0 then put 'wrong var'  ;

Did you check your SAS log? Both of these statements contain syntax errors and the SAS log will contain error messages pointing out where these are.
