What is the RULE that allows that transformation?

Is it:

Spoiler
Take the maximum value?
proc summary data=have;
  by pid;
  var _numeric_;
  output out=want max= ;
run;

Or perhaps:

Spoiler
Take the total value?
proc summary data=have;
  by pid;
  var _numeric_;
  output out=want sum= ;
run;
