my data set :

student    session      test_date        grade

able             1              nov 30              11

baker                           nov 30              11

charlie                         nov 30               12

delta             2             nov 30               10

echo                            nov 30               12

foxtrot                          nov 30               11

what I want:

student    session      test_date        grade

able             1              nov 30              11

baker           1              nov 30              11

charlie          1             nov 30               12

delta             2             nov 30               10

echo             2              nov 30               12

foxtrot           2             nov 30               11

I found this code in a previous post but don't know how to apply it:

%macro process(variable);
retain help_&variable;
if not missing(&variable)
then _&variable = &variable;
else &variable = _&variable;
drop _&variable;
%mend;

data want;
set have;
%process(sex)
%process(country)
%process(period)
run;
