converting ssd files

We received a bunch of SAS ssd data sets from our state department of
health. We don't own the software to open up the ssd files. I've heard of
DBMS Copy as a legitimate way of converting the files into something we can
read - Excel, MS SQL and Access. I am wondering if there are other
alternatives w/o purchasing SAS itself to either link to the data sets
through OLEDB/ODBC or convert the files? Any information would be greatly
appreciated.

StatTransfer also works well for converting the datasets. ( http://www.stattransfer.com/ )

We moved to that for general conversions because DBMS Copy is no longer being maintained.

Is there anyone out there who has converted a .ssd file to a current SAS dataset??

I think it may be possible using current SAS as long as the SSD file was produced on the same operating system and with the same bitness of SAS, most likely 32-bit.
