Hi SAS Forum,

In proc summary code below, the variables that I have included under the "var" statement always have to be numerics (based on literature).

Proc summary data=have;

 class gender;

 var age height weight;

 output  out = want        n= mean= ;

run;

Q. Wouldn't there be any method that we could include character variables as well under "var" statement?

Thanks for your help

Show us some example data what what your final output might be. It is possible that if you are looking for a report that one of the report procedures, either Report or Tabulate can provide what you want as those may be able to give you counts of character values while calculating means and such of other variables. May, depending on your rules.

How do you compute the mean and standard deviation of a character variable?

If you want count the number of each of character variable's level, just remove VAR statement.
Proc summary data=sashelp.class nway;
 class sex;
 output  out = want   ;
run;
