In a proc SQL, is it possible to read the data from an external OLAP Cube (like Essbase or Microsoft) via OLE DB like for a SAS OLAP cube?

example with a SAS OLAP cube:
proc sql;
connect to olap (host=localhost port=5451
user=sasdemo pass=SASDEMO);
create table temp as select * from connection to olap
(
SELECT
{ [geo].[All geo].Children } ON COLUMNS ,
{ CrossJoin ( Hierarchize({ [product].[product].[All product], [product].[product].[All product].Children }) ,
{ [Measures].[QuantitySUM] } ) } ON ROWS
FROM
[Orion]
);
disconnect from olap;
quit;

Yes you can do this, you need sas/access to oledb.

There are some topics in the SAS OLAP Server User's Guide that may also be of use. See the topics:

  • Accessing OLAP Cubes from SAS : SQL Pass-Through Facility for OLAP
  • Connecting to a SAS OLAP Server Using the OLEDB Protocol

Note:  the SQLRC macro will also let you validate the success of your Proc SQL connection.  This willbe documented in the 9.4 release.
