Getting error when i define macro variable

I get an error when I put in the following code:

%let year1 = %sysfunc(year("31DEC2012"D));

[stat_sas]

What is the error?

Indeed:

%let year1 = %sysfunc(year("31DEC2012"D));

%put &year1.;

Seems to work fine.
