sample output

I need the date to show as the first day of the month.  In this case 01JAN2015

You might consider the correct date interval.

   workout_trail_dt = today();
   wrong = intnx(
'day',workout_trail_dt,0,"BEGINNING");
   right = intnx(
'month',workout_trail_dt,0,"BEGINNING");
   put (_all_)(/=);
   format _all_ date9.;
  
run;

workout_trail_dt=
14MAY2015
wrong=
14MAY2015
right=
01MAY2015

You can use the intnx function:

intnx('day',workout_trail_dt,0,"BEGINNING") as first_of_month.
