A Proc Sort Mystery. Please help!

It would be most helpful to post the actual SAS execution log, where I expect there would be diagnostic messages if a function could not execute properly. Also, the OP would benefit from adding the following statement to help with self-diagnosis along the SAS DATA step processing (where "nn" is made unique, so multiple occurrences can be coded for debugging):

PUTLOG '>DIAG-nn>' / _ALL_;
