Monitoring social media platforms to detect harmful content

Supporting the provision of alerts to authorities to improve public safety.

Challenge

Social media has potential to be a breeding ground for hate and disruption, which may spill over into real-world violence.

  • Detecting calls for social violence at an early stage could prevent this overspill.
  • However, it is hard for individuals or authorities to monitor social media to detect these calls, or identify which ones might be problematic.
  • It is also hard to counter misinformation and fake news at an early stage.

Innovation

This solution uses SAS® Viya® to develop a model to provide early warning of calls for violence issued on social media.

avalanche:

  • Used tweets, economic data, and information from security cameras.
  • Added social network analysis to provide even more context.
  • Developed a model to indicate a level of emergency to drive action by authorities.

Impact

The avalanche solution will enable authorities to assess the level of risk in a particular situation.

  • It draws on both social media and information on the ground to assess situations in the moment.
  • It can be used as an early-warning system to indicate potential flashpoints, and pinpoint issues geographically.
  • It could be used anywhere in the world as a way to improve public safety.
