Scoring Criteria

I have 6 variables and each variable has several items to score. Can anyone guide me how to score all these items?

Actually I am creating an Index for corporate firms. I have almost 300 companies and the sample period is 10 years. There are 6 categories that I need to measure. Under each category, there are several statements that will count the score of that category. I may use a likert scale, but I really want to put a scoring criteria using a statistical technique.
