More Signal, Less Noise: Synthetic Data for Model Accuracy
Alina Dudnyuk, Data Scientist, SAS
Imbalanced data remains a persistent hurdle in predictive modeling, particularly in credit risk where default events are rare but critical. This session demonstrates how synthetic data techniques, specifically SMOTE within SAS Studio, can bridge the gap in rare-event scenarios. We will walk through practical, end-to-end workflows to generate and validate synthetic samples while measuring their direct impact on model accuracy. Crucially, we’ll move beyond the math to address the ModelOps perspective -integrating synthetic data as a governed, operationalized component of the analytics lifecycle. Attendees will learn to improve model robustness while avoiding common pitfalls like overfitting, leaving with a blueprint for building production-ready models in data-scarce environments.
