As part of the Data for Good initiative, a team of SAS volunteers has collaborated with the Center for Galapagos Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill to help researchers identify and protect the native sea turtle population. During the last 10 years, researchers have captured photographs of hundreds of turtles, generating over 33,000 images. Each turtle has its own unique set of facial scales that can be used to identify it. Researchers want to utilize computer vision to identify individual turtles to help create an animal health index to track growth rates, health threats and presence data to understand temporal and spatial movement patterns.
