whats your dream system and application architecture?

I'm trying to draft some expansion plan, so it got me thinking. Do you guys have an ideal picture of what would make a robust, reliable and powerful enterprise architecture? is it common to engage an external SAS consultant to propose how the system and application architecture should be?
