How do I know I have proc formatting.  And how do I access it. Is it proc formatting different from "Insert a New Column" in Query Builder?  Using proc formatting, I want to tried some new tricks I learned through SAS online:  CNTLIN

DATA LOOKUP;

INFILE DATAIN;

INPUT

     @20 IDNUMBER $CHAR16. ;

START = IDNUMBER ;

LABEL = 'KEEP' ;

FMTNAME = '$LOOKUP';

PROC SORT

DATA = LOOKUP

OUT = FMT

NODUPKEY ;

BY START ;

PROC FORMAT CNTLIN=FMT;

PROC FORMAT is part of Base SAS -- so you have it!

SAS Enterprise Guide has a task that can convert your data set into a SAS format.  It's in Tasks->Data->Create Format from Data Set.  I have a blog post that describes the task here:

http://blogs.sas.com/content/sasdummy/2009/04/27/creating-a-sas-format-from-a-data-set/

The task generates a SAS program that you can use to practice your new PROC FORMAT skills if you want to learn more about how to use it in your own programs.

Note that when that blog post was written, the task was an "extra" custom task that you had to download.  Now it's built in -- no need to download as a custom task.
