If using Stored Processes, then you have a SAS Metadata environment.  You must use an IOM connection in that case -- there is no COM option.

As said, COM is the "automatic" Local server that you use when you have EG and SAS installed together on the same Windows machine, no metadata server necessary.  If you are connecting to a configured workspace (for example, "SASApp") -- that's IOM.

Usually COM is only used to start a Workspace Server on your local machine.

If you connect to a remote server you use the IOM Bridge protocoll.

Maybe this link to the documentation can help you understand the infrastructure of SAS: SAS(R) 9.4 Integration Technologies: Overview

If you want to confirm what type of connection you have with your SAS server, for example in EG, right click on the server name in the server list (possibly SASApp) and select properties. You will see the protocol is IOM.

If you do the same thing with a workspace server in SMC, under Server Manager, you will see the protocol is COM.
