I'd like to define and then access Unix environmental variables while running EG 4.1 on my Windows workstation.

I know that I can use sysget() to get the values of environmental variables. I succeeded with sysget('TZ').

But how do I define those environmental variables on the Unix server side (hp-ux)? I tried adding the definition to /etc/profile, but EG did not recognize variables defined there. Any suggestions?

My thanks...

I would recommend you NOT make changes to /etc/profile.
/etc/profile should only be edited by the Unix sys-admin.
Within your user login, there should also be .profile, which you may be able to edit.

But to add OS level environment variables via SAS, I have to ask why?
What are you trying to accomplish?

Absolutely correct Chuck. /etc/profile has global effect, and alterations there will influence every user, and possibly adversely.

However, Enterprise Guide uses a login which will have an associated .profile and this might be changed with no impact on other users of the Unix server.

Prior to the SAS9 BI platform, changes were needed to the environment variables to allow Oracle and other DBMS to be accessed from a SAS session. I am not sure that is required now, but there might be some confusion arising from conflicting instructions in an Access product manual and the BI manual. Either way, detailed discussions and testing with the SysAdmin would be strongly advised.

A call to Tech Support is also probably warranted.

Kind regards

David
