Problem solved. Turned out to be a "customized Hadoop VM". Downloading the free single-node VM from either the Cloudera or Hortonworks site resolved the issue.

It looks like the user id that you entered on the Settings dialog for SAS Data Loader does not have the correct permissions.  You will need to go to the Information Center Page and open the Settings dialog, under the Hadoop settings section you will need to change the user and password to the root level user.

If you are using a HortonWorks 2.2 sandbox you would use:

username: root

password: hadoop

If you are using a Cloudera quickstart you would use:

username: root

password: cloudera
