In November 2014, SAS Data Management released a set of new products and updates. I will be highlighting a new product or feature of this release regularly here on the SAS Communities so that you, our most technical users, can get a quick summary to understand what is new and provide some feedback. Today I am highlighting a new product that was released in November 2014: SAS Business Data Network.

SAS Business Data Network release 3.1 replaces the former DataFlux product of the same name. Just like the previous DataFlux product, it is designed to be a centralized repository with a web-based interface for defining, organizing, and managing business terms and concepts. It also allows users to create and manage associations between business terms and technical assets like data sets, database tables, SAS code, process or data management jobs, reports, programs, and much more.

In this new 3.1 release, SAS Business Data Network delivers the following new capabilities:

  • Role-based Business Metadata Access - Users can define roles and assign granular permissions such as:
    • The ability to hide or show terms or term attributes
    • The ability to allow read-only, read and edit, or read, edit, and create permissions on terms or term attributes
    • The ability define these permissions on individual terms, groups of terms, or on term types
  • Workflow-based Business Metadata Management - Users can define and enforce governance policies around how terms are created or changes are approved (e.g edits published or rejected) based on:
    • Predefined workflows which are available out of the box
    • Custom workflows that can be created, edited, referenced, and managed from within SAS Workflow Studio
  • Term-based Customized Templates - Users can create and enforce templates for all new terms so that terms of the same type:
    • Can be created with the same set of common attributes
    • Can inherit the same workflow patterns and therefore be subject to the same governance policies
    • Can inherit the same permissions and therefore be surfaced for read or edit access to the same roles the same way.

Questions? Comments? Post them here and let's start the discussion.

Thank you,

Mike F.

Hi,

I want to ask about the Role-based Business Metadata Access and specifically how to define permissions (read-only,read,write,create children) on term types?

Thank you in advance.
