In the profile section of the data explorer I can see a particular column called "Pattern Count". Can anyone please help me understand the meaning of that column.

In your example that would only be one pattern count (length one, lower case). Think of a field containing state with the following content:
NY, ny, New York, new york
This field have four patterns, if you only expect the field to have a two letters (upper case), you can quickly see that you have a data quality issue.

Pattern count is the number of different distinct patterns in the column.
