I would like to know  , how to get back to original order of a dataset after sorting by certain variable.

Your solutions are highly appreciated.

Thanks

Why do you want to do that? Is this a general interest or an actual problem?

If your original order matters, you would create a sorted copy and word with that ..

One solution might be to store the original order in a variable:

data x;
  set y;

  attrib n length=8;

  n = _N_;
run;

Then, later, after sorting:

proc sort data=x;
  by n;
run;
