Accessing Data from SAP R/3 and SAP ISU

Hi

I want to understand and deploy a framework for fetching data from SAP R/3 and SAP ISU.

What I have got is - SAS Data Surveyor for SAP to the rescue That it provides plugin for R/3 and BW.

Now What I don't understand is SAS Access interface to R/3 , is the embedding application and will work in tendem with data surveyor 

OR

I can use only sas data surveyor to fetch data. 

Please assist on architecture clarity and my queries.
