DEG - Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH

Company background:

For 60 years DEG has been a reliable partner to private-sector companies and financial service providers operating in developing markets. After all, the private sector is an important driver of development. Our customers are mainly based in developing and emerging-market countries as well as in Germany and other industrialised nations. DEG has around 650 employees, who are investing a great deal of commitment and expertise. We work in Cologne and in one of DEG's other 18 locations around the globe. Since 2001 we have been a subsidiary of KfW.

We reach private enterprises in developing countries in two ways: One way is to finance them directly with loans and equity investments. The other is to invest in local banks and financiers, which in turn supply mainly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the ground with financing. We provide them with financing on market terms from our own funds. We provide our customers with capital to enable them to grow and progress sustainably - capital that is often difficult to obtain, particularly in developing countries.

And we offer much more than financing: We give targeted advice to the companies we co-finance as they plan and implement their investments. After all, expertise and experienced partners are key to successful investments in challenging markets. We provide finance and advice to:

  • private-sector companies that invest in sustainable infrastructure projects in developing and emerging-market countries, particularly renewable energy, telecommunications, transport infrastructure, and utilities and waste disposal,
  • companies from the industrial, commercial and services sector in developing and emerging-market countries, as well as investment vehicles that provide equity finance to private companies in these countries,
  • banks, financial institutions and specialist funders that provide reliable access to financing, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries.

Title: Product Owner, Team Risk

Country: Germany

Award Category: SAS Analytics Explorers Advocate

How has SAS Analytics Explorers benefited your career?
It has benefited me two-ways: 1) IT made me a better product owner for my risk-controlling team, through insights gained in challenges and hands-on know-how from training rewards. 2) It expanded my personal expertise regarding Stats/ML/AI and related methods and about the SAS-ecosystem.

What is your favorite challenge you've completed in the program?
SAS Tips & Tricks. I love the level of abstraction and at the same time, that each article has concrete examples with accompanying code I can play with. The accompanying quizzes are an additional motivator to read the articles thoroughly and I feel they help me retain the content very well.

How have you shared the program with other users at your organization?
I have shared my experiences particulary within my team. Meanwhile we're almost all members of the SAS Analytics Explorers program. And we even regularly talk about the challenges within our daily meetings!

What is your favorite reward you've earned?
The programming 2 course which I received as a reward greatly benefited me in my understanding of the SAS language and it’s concepts. I also like the small inductive charger with the SAS logo on my desk :).

What SAS products do you use?
We use SAS Enterprise Guide. However, within my team we are discussing the potential benefits of migrating towards SAS Viya. We imagine Viya could bring and improvement in the reporting domain. This is especially relevant, as we have several new reporting demands, e.g. for ESG-reporting.
