The Curiousity Cup has established itself as a distinctive global competition that challenges students to apply data and AI to real‑world questions. In its fifth anniversary year, the 2026 edition demonstrated not only growing global participation, but also how taking part in the event impacts career pathway decisions and choices.
A Global Learning Experience Beyond the Classroom
In 2026, almost 200 student teams registered, and 138 research papers were submitted, reflecting an amazing increase in interest in the competition. Teams came from every corner of the world, with finalists from Malaysia, the Philippines, Romania, Slovakia, the United States, and Denmark. Student feedback about the value of taking part included:
Thirteen teams advanced to the second round, where they presented their work to an international judging panel, gaining exposure and feedback rarely available in traditional coursework.
What the 2026 Winners Achieved
The final results highlight the depth and diversity of student work across three competition categories:
Business & Economy
The winning team UCCU from New York University investigated financial market behaviour through a residual‑based volatility framework applied to U.S. VIX data. Taking part allowed the team to grow and showcase their advanced analytical thinking and rigorous model evaluation skills. The runner‑up, Machine Still Learning from the University of Malaya, applied predictive analytics to customer churn in the telecommunications sector, expanding their knowledge and understanding of how data science techniques directly inform business decision‑making.
Health, Science & Engineering
In this category, STATYX from FEU Institute of Technology (Philippines) explored ecological tipping points by modelling the effects of artificial light at night on urban biodiversity using avian indicators. The team learnt how to connect AI and analytics results to environmental research and policy setting. Runner‑up Nasi Lembak Tambah Nasi from IMU University (Malaysia) focused on predicting nurse fatigue levels to improve hospital staff optimisation, and saw the real-world impact of using technology, data and AI on people’s lives.
Culture, Lifestyle & Entertainment
The winning team Statistix & Chill from the Bratislava University of Economics and Business (Slovakia) examined the impact of social media on student mental health and academic performance, providing original insights to an issue highly relevant to today’s student population. And runner‑up ColdChain Predictors from the Bucharest University of Economic Studies (Romania) developed ensemble models, leveraged feature engineering and model benchmarking techniques to predict refrigerator pricing and business impact.
Why Events like Curiousity Cup Matters for Students
The 2026 Curiosity Cup continues to give students the opportunity to use technology to apply their curriculum knowledge, to solve industry focused problems, with data and AI. But also how to:
Students who reached the finalist stage also earnt digital credentials, reinforcing the value of the experience beyond the competition itself.
The event is a platform for curiosity and confidence building. It is deliberately designed as a learning journey rather than a narrow contest. Teams are judged on how well they prepare data, analyse it responsibly and communicate insights clearly. Skills that directly align with academic success and employability.
As the 2026 edition illustrates, students who take part gain much more than rankings. They build confidence in their AI and analytical abilities, see how their skills translate to real‑world contexts, and join a truly global community of emerging data and AI professionals.
For students curious about where data and AI can take them, the Curiousity Cup offers a proven pathway, from curiousity to capability.
