Taking Gamification to the next level - Hackathons

AI and especially GenAI is everywhere today. But is it everything? To everyone? All of the time?

The Goa Institute of Management (GIM) & SAS annual hackathon, put GenAI at its centre this years event. On the one hand the event aimed to showcase the remarkable talent and ingenuity of students. On the other, the event aimed to give students the chance to demonstrate how GenAI can add business value and drive innovation.

Hype Cycle

GenAI is certainly quickly traveling along the Hype Cycle. This years annual hackathon attracted an overwhelming interest and response. 425 colleges and a total of 1319 students registered. Sounds like peak expectation. Right? But what this event also illustrated, was how students are asking questions like – how can we use real data? how do we trust the output? How do we manage bias?

Lessons Learnt

That’s why participants were given a “real world” dataset. The goal - to prompt the student teams to identify a novel problem statement in the context of predicting trends within the telco industry and demonstrate how using SAS, data and AI techniques provide insights into the future challenges faced by the industry and the innovative solution that can be applied to address them.

So, What Next?

As well as real world data, hackathon events are now also providing students the opportunity to collaborate with experienced professionals. From data scientists to AI engineers, to technologist – hackathons now bring industry and academic teams together. As diverse teams, using state of the art tech, applying cutting edge data and AI skills, can take investigating real world data to the next level.

That’s why SAS Hackathon exists. Showcasing at SAS Innovate this week and kicking off in May, SAS Hackathon provides the opportunity for people from different regions, with diverse backgrounds and various skill levels, to work together to invent something new. Using real world data.

Feels Real

It's through events like the GIM SAS Hackathon, or the SAS Hackthon – plus many others, that students are been given the opportunity to work in diverse teams and with seasoned experts, use real world data, cutting edge tech and data, AI & GenAI techniques - to innovate.
