hello,

i have a very basic proc SQL question.

What should the syntax be to count the number of different observations in a variable? For instance in the table below

ID     Variable

1          X

2          X

3          Y

4          X

How would I find the total count of X and Y appearances in the "Variable" column using proc SQL?

Thank you!

data have;
input ID     Variable $;
cards;

1          X

2          X

3          Y

4          X
;

proc sql;
create table want as
select variable, count(variable)as count
from have
group by variable;
quit;
