Converting Date Variabes

Please assist me: I am trying to convert this date format 05AUG2014:00:00:00.000 to just the day of the month in a data step, e.g

from 05AUG2014:00:00:00.000 to 05

   day = day(datepart(dt));
   format dt datetime20.3;
run;
