The MERGE option is an internal, undocumented option that will be phased out in the future. It was not intended for production use.

Phased out? will that functionality disappear or get another syntax. It is a great feature after all.
Thanks

In 9.3 you will be able to use a new MERGEDLEGEND statement, where the semantics are clearer.
