Thank you for the screen images, and the clear description of your challenge. Very helpful. Given that your prompt controls seem to require the report consumer to choose one value (drop down or list of radio buttons), you should be able to accomplish this in VA 7.1 or newer using parameters.   VA 7.4 did add support for cascading prompts at the report and section/page level. So you no longer have to use prompt controls in the section body with manual interactions to make prompt choices filter based on prior selections in other controls. However, this doesn't let a prompt control at the report or page level filter some, but not all, of the tables and graphs on the page. As you know, when creating the filter dependencies between all of the prompts in the section body in the interactions view, the filter from school years is inherited (dotted line) by all tables and graphs that have a direct filter dependency (solid line) on teacher name, since teacher name is at the bottom of the filter dependency chain of controls.   This inherited filter can be eliminated if you are using VA 7.1 or newer using parameters, because all of the prompt controls are single select. Parameters in 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 are single value only. 7.4 adds support for multi-value parameters and date-based parameters if you ever need to change your list controls to be multi-select (check boxes) instead of single (radio buttons).   Even if you have VA 7.4, you would need to keep your filter controls in the body of the section so that they don't filter all objects in the section automatically. You can keep you filter relationships between your five filter controls as well, so you get that cascading effect. Instead of creating a filter interaction between any of the prompt/filter controls and the tables and graphs in the section, you'll instead need to create advanced filter expressions for each table and graph that references parameters that are associated with each of the prompt/filter controls. So the pie chart, for instance, would need to have an advanced filter expression that references five parameters, such as p_School_Year p_Test_Name p_School_Name , p_Grade_Levels, and p_Teacher_Name. Your dual axis line chart would have an advanced filter expression that only references one parameter, p_Teacher-Name. You create parameters in the left data panel, and you associate a parameter with the prompt/filter control using the Roles tab in the right panel. You'd create the advanced filter expression for each table and graph using the Filters tab in the right panel as well.   Parameters are global in scope too, so you can filter tables and graphs on other tabs (sections/pages) even though you can't always see the controls that set the parameter values.   VA 7.1 Parameter documentation VA 7.4 Parameter documentation   I hope that helps. Hi Chad,   Thank you for your question. Just getting a chance to respond. The only integration point between SAS Web Report Studio (WRS) and SAS Visual Analytics is that you can load a LASR table based on an information map. As you likely know, WRS uses information maps as an abstraction to all data sources. There certainly is a great deal of functionality in VA that existed in WRS, and VA does many things that WRS did not. We recently added dynamic text in VA 7.4, which existed in WRS. We are planning to add more of the capabilities that WRS provides, such as measure placement in a crosstab.   WRS evolved in 9.3 and is fully supported on all maintenance release of SAS 9.4. I think customers still using WRS can certainly benefit from its reporting and OLAP capabilities while leveraging VA for other use cases where things like mobile delivery, visual discovery, and approachable analytics are important, to name a few.   Rick ... As you may already know, SAS has two new releases of SAS Visual Analytics (VA). SAS Visual Analytics 8.1 became available this March and SAS Visual Analytics 7.4 will be available in late April. Why do we have two separate releases so close together? Why didn’t we just combine all the features into one release? Well, SAS released VA 8.1 on Viya before it had all the features in VA 7.3 because VA on Viya is now the foundation for new visual offerings, such as SAS Visual Data Mining and Machine Learning (VDMML). Viya is the new, open architecture that’s built for analytics innovation. VDMML needs self-service data preparation and visual exploration capabilities too, and SAS believes the new data mining and machine learning capabilities are ready for the market now. VA 7.4 requires SAS 9 and VA 8.1 requires the new SAS Viya architecture. VA 7.4 has everything that’s in VA 7.3, and gives existing VA customers several enhancements in a familiar environment.    SAS VA 8.1 requires Viya, and it was built around the following key themes:   A redesigned user experience built on HTML 5 Unified exploration, analysis, and report design (think: Explorer and Designer combined into one interface) Data wrangling and location intelligence capabilities A new, unified, web-based SAS Environment Manager for administration Of course, that’s not all that is new in VA 8.1. Interested in learning more? You can find more information about additional new features in our online documentation. Also be sure to check out VA 8.1 in this SAS Viya video library, which contains “How Do I” videos for you to explore, and review the Differences in the SAS 9 and SAS Viya 3.2 platforms.   Now, on to SAS Visual Analytics 7.4. We realize that most existing VA customers may not be ready to switch to SAS VA on Viya just yet. For those of you, we have the upcoming VA 7.4 release, which will be available in late April.   VA 7.4 delivers enhancements frequently requested by users to the existing user interface. Customers will be familiar with the migration utilities and steps. VA 7.4 customers will now be able to switch to the modern viewer, which has most of the features that the classic viewer in VA 7.3 has. One feature that is still not in the modern viewer is the ability for report consumers to see and change stored processes prompt values. We’ve also made enhancements to the following:   Calculations – an option for ignoring missing values is now available, for example Dynamic text - display one or more measures, filter context, and parameter values. Prompts & parameters – including parameters based on dates, multi-value parameters, and a dynamic slider control There’s much more, and you’ll be able to check out the new features in detail once SAS VA 7.4 has been released in late April.   How do VA 7.4 features compare to VA 8.1’s? Well, they’re not exactly the same. Dynamic text, alerts, guest mode, and a few other features are currently not available in VA 8.1. Most of these features are planned to be in the next release of VA on the Viya platform. This will be VA 8.2 and planned to be available toward the end of 2017. Most customers with mature VA deployments on SAS 9 should consider migrating their existing environment to VA 7.4 on SAS 9.4, and transition their VA on SAS 9.4 environment to Viya with VA 8.2 when it becomes available.   Adding a VA 8.1 on Viya environment while keeping the VA on SAS 9 environment running is an option. If you need both, report consumers will be able to leverage them both quite easily.  The VA 7.4 modern viewer and VA 8.1 viewer have a consistent look and feel. Once a report consumer understands one, they will know the other. SAS Add-in for Microsoft Office and SAS Mobile BI will be releasing again in late April at the same time as VA 7.4. Both will be able to connect to VA 7.x on SAS 9 and VA 8.1 on Viya from a single application. I wasn't able to recreate this issue in VA 7.3. I checked to ensure the custom sort was correct for the first level of a hierarchy in both a crosstab and a bar chart. Hi Kaushal,   You should be able to set the pointer on a single value slider using a parameter passed on the URL, but you can't assign a parameter to a range slider (two values). Parameters only support a single value in the current release, and parameters can only be associated with character or numeric data items. Hi Andy,   I noticed that there are no replies to your question. Just wanted to confirm that there isn't a way to make the data tip values reflect only the brushed segment of a bar, for instance. As you know, the filter interaction reduces the bar to only include values for the selection in the first visualization, so the data tip values for a filtered bar chart would display the value you are interested in. If you have enough screen real estate, perhaps you could consider two target bar charts, one with the brush interaction and the other with the filter interaction.   Rick ... View more

You mentioned you searched the VA User's Guide and couldn't find a simple tutorial. Just in case you didn't see this part, you might find the section of the documentation at this link helpful.   SAS(R) Visual Analytics 7.2: User's Guide - Create a Link to an External URL   To create a link to an external PDF from a list table, you'll need to go to the interactions tab in the right panel. From there, click the New option and select External Link from the drop-down.       Next, you will see a pop-up window where you can enter the static portion of the URL.     From there, click the plus symbol, labeled Add a new parameter. Then you'll see...     Choose a data item for the source drop-down selector that represents the portion of the URL that is different for each row of your list table. If your source data contains the full URL, you might need to create a calculated data item in the left panel to truncate the portion of the URL that is the same for every row. The next release of Visual Analytics will be 8.1. It is anticipated to be available in Q3 2016. With this release, SAS Visual Analytics will be based on HTML5, rather than Flash, for all authoring, viewing, and administration interfaces.
