After comparing side by side, I am finally seeing what's wrong: dataset1 study ID (already a character variable, just picked a few for example) 1 10 112 and dataset2 study ID (after converting to character) 1 10 112 Why is this happening and how should I fix??

Sorry I did not make this clear before. The character variable I converted to in dataset2 have the same variable name as study_id in dataset1 (both are named study_id). The original numeric ID variable was named something else. Should I make a new variable in dataset1 as well and just have the values equal to study_id and link this to dataset2?

Thank you. Can you give some suggestions on how I should fix that? I can't think of another way of doing this (e.g. convert to character via the put function and make it the same length as dataset1 study ID). I need to keep those IDs with numbers+letters too in dataset1 as I might be linking to a third dataset with this kind of ID format.

Than you so much for the suggestion. So I have ran proc freq on both datasets and there are definitely matching values. Study id in dataset1 have both numbers only ID and numbers+letters ID, and it is a character variable with a length of 5. but study id in dataset2 have only numbers ID, (numerical variable with length 8, but actually it ranges from only 1 digit to 4 digit ID), so I had to convert to a character variable with a length of $5 before merging. If I understood your suggestions correctly, did this cause the missing values in the merged dataset??

Dear all, I have 2 datasets that I would like to merge. dataset1 has 137 observations and 7 variables. dataset2 has 417 observations and 165 variables. after sorting both dataset, I put: data hpvmerge; merge dataset1 (in=a) dataset2 (in=b); by study_id; if a=1; run; SAS did not give any errors and there was 137 observations and 171 variables in hpvmerge dataset. however, when I opened this merged dataset, all values for the variables from the larger dataset (dataset2) are missing. I am not sure what went wrong and would like to get some help from you guys. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the suggestion. Is there a way to sort the data so that the obeservations with missing information come second within the duplicate? I am still learning SAS... thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion. It's good to know that I can use the WHERE option in proc transpose like this. I have over 100 variables, it might take me a while to fill everything in!

I am aware of the proc sort option NODUP (compares all variables) and NODUPKEY (compares only the BY variable). I want to delete the observation that has no value in the variables except for 'id' and 'event', in my example this would be the first line of the duplicate. I thought about using the NODUPKEY option but that would delete the second duplicate correct?

Dear all, I have a dataset that looks like id event dob res status date ........ 1 1 month 5/20/80 yes . 5/30/17 .......... 1 2 month . no . . 1 3 month . . . . 1 3 month . . 1 . 2 1 month 3/22/80 no . . 2 2 month . . 2 9/20/16 3 1 month 7/20/81 no . 9/25/16 3 3 month . . . . 3 3 month . . 1 . 3 6 month . yes 1 10/3/16 and so on... I need to transpose this dataset to wide format, but most subjects have duplicate 'event' value, so my usual transpose code did not work. I did: proc transpose data=long1 out=wide1 prefix=res; by id; id event; var res; run; I went back to the original dataset and seems like one of the duplicate does not contain information in any of the variables except for 'id' and 'event'. My question: is it possible to delete the duplicate event line that doesn't contain any information so I can use my transpose code?? Thank you!!

Dear all, I have a dataset that have 5 date variables and only 1 date variable has value (example: date1=. date2=. date3=5/30/17 date4=. date5=.) I want to create a new variable called datefinal that returns the date value of the variable that's not missing (so it would return 5/30/17 in the example). Is there a SAS function for this? or do I have to use an array to do this? Thank you!

Hi everyone, I need some guidance on the following: My dataset contains 45 observations and 4 variables: cough, fever, sweats, flu; each variable is numerical with choices 1=<2 months, 2=3-4 months, 3=5-6 months, 4=>6 months, 9=unknown. I need to create a new variable called 'anysymptom' where it would give me the longest duration for any of these symptoms (e.g. for observation 1 that has cough=1 fever=2 sweats=4 flu=9, the new variable would return 4, which is >6 months). There are also missing values for some of the observations. Is there a function I could utilize for this? Any advise is appreciated! Thanks!
