In PROC GLIMMIX, we do not understand the difference between specifying RANDOM INT and RANDOM _RESIDUAL. How does one go about determining which is more appropriate?

Former models G-side random components, and latter models R-side. Read about conditional (G) and marginal (R) distributions to understand how these might tie to the inferences you are attempting to draw (not knowing your data or questions).
