Change the algorithm so that the placement of the icons is more compact, vertically.
Allow different auto arrange algorithms to exist and to be chosen from a list.
Add option to manually added links that "lock" the relative position of those objects which are linked. By "lock" I mean that an Auto-Arrange algorithm will not be given "privilege" to change the relative positions of the objects. Auto Arrange might be allowed to move the objects as a collection.
Allow individual process flows to have settings enabling or disabling Auto Arrange or default to the setting in the user's options.
Great ideas!! There should also be an option to disable Auto Arrange in the system options. Also, the "snap to grid" squares are much too small. It's much too hard to align programs; sometimes when I double-click on a program, the icon moves.
There are other problems too. See the following thread. Sometimes Auto Arrange turns on without permission, wrecking my carefully arranged process flows, costing me valuable time. It's very annoying and I would consider it a bug.
Auto-Arrange on the Process Flow is a feature that I could cheerfully see being removed from SAS Enterprise Guide. The fact that it is ON by default simply means that I have to remember to turn it OFF.
I realise that some people like it, so how about a compromise and adopt the idea promoted by seanrez and allow the user to set the default ON/OFF status of the Auto-Arrange facility as a system wide option. There are other such options, such as the life-saving "Enable Project Log for New Projects", so adding "Enable Auto-Arrange for New Projects" would fit nicely alongside this.
We recently upgraded to SAS EG 8.3 and were exploring ways for users to turn off the Auto Arrange for EG Projects. Have there been any updates on this idea or is it still "under consideration" by the team? Thanks!
