Visual Analytics: data format

Dear all,

 

I'm new to Visual Analystics and have so far watched some videos on the topic.

What data format do I need for Visual Analytics? Is it necessary to have a star Schema in order to work with dimensions and measures or can I have flat files which include dimensions and measure in this one file?
