Java object in DataStep

This is a general datastep questions and I am not sure which section is goes under.
As of 9.2 you are able to create a reference to a java class, created by the user, in the datastep.
I was wondering of any practical uses for this? Will it replace the hash object?
Has anyone used this succesfully?
