SAS Hackathon goes all in. Join us in Las Vegas!
Planning to attend SAS Innovate in Las Vegas (April 16-19, 2024)? If so, don't miss the opportunity to engage in the SAS Hackathon Boot Camp. This immersive program unites adept problem solvers in a dynamic Trustworthy AI environment, welcoming individuals from diverse professional backgrounds. The focus is on elevating lending practices through an exciting SAS Hackathon Sprint Challenge, regardless of whether you have a background in the finance industry. The SAS Hackathon Boot Camp is free (or complimentary) for all registered attendees of SAS Innovate.
The Challenge
This challenge aims to address the pervasive issue of hidden biases in credit application models, particularly in relation to gender, age, race, location, and other potential factors. Participants will be provided with a challenging dataset that simulates real-world scenarios, where biases may exist. The goal is to create a fair credit approval model that evaluates loan applications without perpetuating or amplifying existing prejudices. Or build a dashboard that helps evaluate potential issues in the dataset so they can be discussed with stakeholders.
Options
Participants can choose between coding and low/no-code options. The challenge encourages collaboration using AI, analytics, and open-source tools on SAS® Viya.

- Detecting Bias in Credit Approval Modeling Data (Coding)
- Building Trust, One dashboard at a Time: Ethical Data Visualization Challenge (No-code)
Access
Bring your own laptop. SAS will provide:
- Access to SAS Viya in the SAS Cloud running on Azure and accelerated by Intel
- Problem statement and data
- SAS mentors will be available for coaching while you build your use case
Teamwork
Work as a team 2-4 people, valuable skills:
- Critical thinking to make decisions on fairness
- Awareness regarding different types of biases existing in data
- Ability to interpret and communicate data insights
- Strong communication skills to convey complex concept
- Understanding of model interpretability techniques
- Knowledge in machine learning and model development (Code option)
- Understanding of data visualization techniques (No code option)

Evaluation/Awards
All teams are winners just by participating. Participants will be honored with a diploma and a SAS Hackathon Boot Camp t-shirt. Projects will be reviewed by jurors/mentors. The best team will have the opportunity to be rewarded with The SAS Hackathon Ideation Game. Evaluation Scorecard will be shared after registration.

- First hack: Noon-3:00 p.m.
- Second hack: 3:15-6.15 p.m.
Who can join the Boot Camp?
