Viewning of datasets created in a step

Hi, when I create datasets I prefer to view them inside the available screen area. However when the data are displayed default seems to be a very broad formatting so that even small datasets are not viewable without scrolling horizontally. Even though I set a format 4. for for instance integers smaller than 10.000, a lot more space is used for the column. I want to able to have a narrower column width to be the default. How can I do this?
