The January stable release of SAS Viya (2020.1.2) adds a much-anticipated Data View enhancement that allows you to select how you would like duplicate data items from an applied Data View to be used.

Check out this article if you’d like to learn the basics of Data Views.

This post will focus on the new enhanced user interface since the other Data View features and management remain the same.

Apply a Data View

When you go to apply your Data View you will see the menu option renamed from Data views... to Manage data views....

New Apply Data View Options

Next you will be prompted to select how you would like to apply the Data View.

Notice the * on the third option. If you decide to Keep existing data items in the report this means that the Data View you selected will not impact your current data items. However, if that data source has a Default Data View assigned via the Administration Settings then when that data source is selected the Default Data View will be applied as the data source is added to the report. The Keep existing data items in the report only applies to the current Data View attempting to be applied.

Let’s take a look at the new user interface (UI) for the last option Let me decide how to apply each data item. There is a selection box at the top of the UI which allows you to Include unchanged data items or not. This way you can easily identify which data items the Data View wants to add or modify.

In this Data View named CARS_AVG_MPGs_WithHierarchy I have three data items that differ from the original data source.

  • MPG(City) - the data view data item uses an Average aggregation
  • MPG(Highway) - the data view data item uses an Average aggregation
  • Origin - Type - Make - Model - a new hierarchy defined in the data view

Looking at the first line item, MPG (City) here are the available options. If you want the data item duplicated with the (1) as a suffix, then you do not need to select anything from the menu.

Here’s an example of how the Apply Data View options look and the result in the Data pane. Notice the hierarchy and MPG(City)(1) were added to the data item lists. For the MPG(Highway) data item, notice there is only one listed; this is because we opted to Replace the data item that came in with the original data source.

Summary

The new Apply Data View user interface available for Data Views will give you the granular precision to decide how you want data item changes applied. For additional Data View information see these articles:
