Use a List Control as a Visual Analytics Report or Page/Section Prompt

A common report requirement is to prompt users for a selection of values to filter on. One of the more popular Controls to use is the List, which lets the user select multiple values. You can use this control in any of the three report locations: Report Prompt, Page or Section Prompt, and in the report canvas.

Using the List Control in the report canvas is the most straight forward; simply drag-and-drop the control onto the canvas and define your filter actions (or interactions) to the target objects.   If you want to use the List Control in the Report or Page/Section Prompt areas, there is one extra step that is required which has generated a few phone calls to me.

Tip: You must use a Prompt Container in the Report or Page/Section Prompt areas. These screenshots are taken from VA 8.2 but the same concept applies to previous versions of Visual Analytics such as VA 7.3, 7.4 and 8.1.

Step 1: Add a Prompt Container to the Report or Page/Section Prompt area

From the Objects pane, drag-and-drop the Prompt Container object to your desired location.

Step 2: Add the List Control to the Prompt Container

This is where the little usage tip becomes helpful.

First, pin the Objects pane open. With the Objects pane open, you can see all of the available objects and the Prompt Container.

Second, expand the Prompt Container.

Third, drag-and-drop the List Control into the Prompt Container.

Step 3: Assign Roles to the List Control

Use the Roles pane to assign roles to the List Control and proceed as usual in designing your report.

this does not work on VA 7.3 !!

Hi @snehasanghadia,

The steps are the same in SAS VA 7.3. The screenshots are not the same as SAS VA 7.3. You'll need to refer to the documentation and your own environment for the steps in SAS VA 7.3 and VA 7.4. https://support.sas.com/documentation/cdl/en/vaug/68648/HTML/default/viewer.htm#n148ej0xya6fr0n1wckj...

Kind Regards,

Michelle
