Top 3 Reasons Bookmarks are an Asset

Most of my childhood was spent creating bookmarks. I can easily say it was more than my share. I used things like construction paper, markers, stickers and ribbons to make the most special bookmarks for use in schoolbooks, Scholastic books, to trade or even give away as gifts.

It was fun and time-consuming and allowed for great creativity, but as a child I did not realize the actual importance of bookmarks. As a matter of fact, for many years the main purpose of my bookmarks was to mark the book I was reading so I could finish and eventually get enough signatures for a personal pan pizza - Thank you, Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program (IYKYK!)

Bookmarks can seem like such a simple-minded topic, but over the years as the use of hardcopy books began to fade for replacement with digital copies, I began to realize just how important bookmarks are.

In this post, I highlight my top three reasons digital bookmarks are an asset in SAS Law Enforcement Intelligence.

First, bookmarks allow for quick access. In today’s world, everyone is looking for ways to save time with quick and efficiency access. I’ve even foregone pleasing aesthetics to achieve my goal. Thankfully we don’t have to forego anything, and the Bookmarks control is configured to appear in its own section right on the user’s home page. This allows for fast and easy access directly from the first page the user sees, once signed in to the solution, without having to navigate through a toolbar or other link to get to the list.

The icon to create the bookmark is conveniently located on the object’s toolbar. Click the icon and assign a label and category if preferred.

Second, bookmarks help reduce errors. An example would be like entering incorrect terms or transposing letters when keying in search terms such as a title or object. Let’s say an investigator is currently working on an investigation with the title Drugs Related Incident. To open the object without a bookmark, it takes two steps. First you would have to go to the search and type out the entire 22-character title, without mistakes. That’s not much to type out, but as we’ve learned we all appreciate fast and efficient work. Then, you would spend time discerning which object to open, especially if there happened to be a similar title like Drug Related Incident, where both objects would appear in the results list.

Having a bookmark on a specific object allows for a single click to open the object, avoiding the need to go to the search, type out search terms, and select the correct object from the results.

Third, bookmarks help with organization. Aren’t we all just trying to be organized? This really hits home for me as I’ve been navigating the realm of minimalism over the last couple of years. Less is more. When you have less, it’s easier to search and find what you need.

The bookmark is also customizable making organization easy. Simply assign a label and a category and the bookmarked object will appear in the bookmarks section of the home page.

If an investigator had several specific objects they were frequently accessing during an investigation, they could bookmark each one and make use of the categories to collate the objects into an even more organized list.

Bookmarks can be updated or deleted using the Manage My Bookmarks menu, to maintain organization within the bookmarks section.
