The Curiosity Cup, organized by SAS, has become a premier platform for aspiring data scientists to showcase their skills and gain real-world experience. This prestigious competition connects young professionals with industry leaders, offering a unique opportunity to demonstrate their expertise.
UNVEILING THE CHAMPIONS
The 2024 edition crowned winners in three categories:
1. Data Preparation: Brain Team, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, Malaysia
2. Data Analysis: Data Detectives, University of Economics in Bratislava, Slovakia
3. Data Presentation: Data Crusaders, University of San Antonio Texas, US
These teams tackled complex challenges, ranging from predicting brain stroke occurrence to analyzing mental health trends and developing frameworks for world energy consumption analysis.
INSIDE THE WINNING STRATEGY
The Data Detectives, champions of the Data Analysis category, shared insights into their journey. Michaela Ilavská, a team member, emphasized the importance of diverse skills within their group:
"Daniel and Andrej were gifted with logical thinking, while Lenka and I complemented the team with our courage and vision."
Their project on depression and anxiety among university students showcased not only their analytical skills but also their commitment to addressing pressing social issues.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
Oscar Yap Wing Keat from the Brain Team highlighted the hurdles they faced:
"The most challenging aspect was diving into data mining and predictive modeling without a pure IT background. I had to start with zero knowledge and be extremely attentive during lectures."
This experience underscores the competition's role in pushing participants beyond their comfort zones, fostering rapid skill acquisition and adaptability.
THE MENTOR'S PERSPECTIVE
Dr. Preethi, mentor to the Brain Team, shared her diverse role:
"I started off as a teacher, then became their mentor. Towards the end, I sort of became their team member, helping them along the way."
Mentors play a vital role in guiding students through competition and connecting their academic knowledge with industry needs.
