How does a lack of access to nutritious food impact a child’s early development?
That’s the question Team Peaches from the University at Albany - SUNY, New York, explored in their Curiosity Cup 2025 project, earning a place among the top 15 teams worldwide out of 112. Great achievement and congratulations!
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), food insecurity refers to situations where individuals or households are uncertain about, or unable to obtain, enough food due to financial constraints or lack of resources.
The goal of the team was to understand whether growing up in a food-insecure household increases the risk of developmental delays and whether that risk differs across racial and ethnic groups.
Using SAS OnDemand for Academics and data from the 2023 National Survey of Children’s Health, they examined more than 21,000 U.S. children aged 0 – 5 years.
